Deep heat mining means the extraction of geothermal energy from an artificially constructed underground pool for the production of heat and power. Using ORC-machines (Organic Rankine Cycle), temperatures at the drill head beginning at about 100° C are sufficient. The functional principle of geothermal facilities is relatively simple. After a first deep drilling has been sunk, an underground geothermal pool is created by artificial expanding of an already existing network of fissures. The hereby used technology “Hydraulic Fracturing” bases on an injection of water by a pressure of several hundred bar. In a geothermal pool the water is warmed and is re-delivered through one or more drillings, so-called production drillings, to the earth’s surface. There, a heat exchanger conveys the heat onto a generator cycle for energy production. A good portion of the remaining heat can be fed into a district heating network. In a closed cycle the cooled water returns to the pool through the injection drilling. In Soultz-sous-Foręts in the Alsace a Hot-Dry-Rock pilot plant is being built. The jointed pool has been successfully tested several times – with a promising energy production.
